Ria: US loses key tool of power

https://ria.ru/20261008/yakovenko-2122998329.html

All of this collapsed — if not overnight, then in the course of the special military operation in Ukraine, which the United States and the West largely brought upon themselves, having proven unable to soberly assess the situation, Russia’s potential, and their own capabilities. This is similar to the conflict with Iran, where they also took the initiative and miscalculated just as catastrophically, even though the experience of the twelve‑day exchange of strikes in June 2025 gave an idea of what awaited the United States and Israel in the event of a full‑scale war — but they decided to ignore this unpleasant circumstance. And it was precisely here that the new quality of the American military presence in the region became fully evident. Tehran, where, after the assassination of Iranian political and military leaders who, apparently, were inclined to negotiate, the country’s leadership passed to the IRGC and its veterans, began launching attacks on American bases in the region, as well as on the energy infrastructure of neighboring Arab countries, which, by agreeing to the American military presence on their territory, found themselves drawn into the escalating conflict.

By Jennifer Kavanagh: A second island chain strategy for Asia

https://www.defensepriorities.org/explainers/a-second-island-chain-strategy-for-asia/

  1. The United States has two core interests in Asia worth protecting with military power: defending the U.S. homeland and safeguarding access to key economic markets and trade routes. The first priority requires little in the way of a forward military presence while the second benefits from a modest air and naval presence to hedge against outcomes that would threaten U.S. interests.

  2. A strategy that shifts U.S. military commitments and presence from the vulnerable “first island chain” toward a more defensible “second island chain” would reduce U.S. military requirements and the risk of a war with China while still protecting U.S. interests.

  3. The United States should narrow its defense commitments in the region, shifting to a clear non-intervention position on Taiwan, ending mutual defense alliances with South Korea, Australia, the Philippines, and Japan, and negotiating narrower and flexible security partnerships in their place. U.S. military posture should change accordingly.

  4. The United States should remove most Army and Marine Corps deployments from Asia and cut air and naval power significantly. The remaining U.S. forces should be consolidated at more survivable bases farther from China’s coast and tasked with securing U.S. economic interests and signaling continued U.S. involvement in the Pacific region.

  5. The United States should provide a clear plan of its intentions and communicate carefully with its allies and China. Changes should be phased over a period of three to eight years, with most changes complete by 2030 and all finalized by 2035.

https://responsiblestatecraft.org/first-island-chain-military/

Most importantly, the outcome of the U.S. war in Iran reveals clearly that the current U.S. first island chain presence is not sustainable or survivable. Defenders of the status quo argue that first island chain bases are essential for dispersing U.S. forces and assets for any contingency situation, such as a war over Taiwan, but bases in Japan and the Philippines cannot serve this purpose if they cannot be effectively defended. Pulling forces back to the second island chain would not make them invulnerable to Chinese attack, but they would be more defensible and significantly reduce the risk of conflict with China.

Imagine a product which is so good that every household in North America and Europe is willing to spend some $20 per month to use it. Those are 400 million households for a total revenue of $48 billion per year. That is a laughable sum when compared to the ~$1.1 trillion contracted by OpenAI and Anthropic with Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle for current and future compute.

Wall street Journal

Believers in the artificial-intelligence boom need to take a very close look at this number: 9% of GDP.

That is how much American businesses and consumers eventually have to spend per year on the services of companies like Anthropic and OpenAI to justify the staggering sums being committed to the technology right now.

Is it plausible that Americans will spend as much of their income on this one technology as they do on food? Roughly twice what the nation pays for all forms of energy or all computers and software? Seven times what consumers spend on phone, streaming, and internet services combined?

You should be skeptical.
